Promotion[edit]
On July 5, 2011, Mac Miller announced the name of Blue Slide Park on his YouTube page. On August 22, Miller announced via Twitter that the first single, 'Frick Park Market', would be released on August 18 along with a music video. Since the video's release, it has reached over 22 million views.[4] The song has also debuted at number 60 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[5] Miller announced there will be no guest appearances on the album. 'Smile Back' was released on September 23.[6] The title track, 'Blue Slide Park', was released October 13. Miller had said the track would be released once he received 25,000 pre-orders, which occurred that same day.[7] On October 21, Miller held a private album listening session for NYC journalists, receiving positive reviews.[8]

Following the album's release and chart success, the track 'Smile Back' became Miller's highest-charting song at the time by reaching number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite not being released as an official single.[9]

Commercial performance[edit]
Blue Slide Park debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 145,000 copies in its first week, making it the first independently-distributed debut album to top the chart since Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg Food (1995).[21] In the second week, the album fell to number 24; at the time it was the sixth-largest drop from #1, tied with Michael Bublé's 2011 Christmas album. As of August 2012, the album has sold 344,000 copies.[22] On May 14, 2018, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined sales and streams in excess of 500,000 units in the United States.[23]
Blue Slide Park earned 12,000 album-equivalent units in the week following Miller's death on September 7, 2018, thus allowing the album to re-enter the Billboard 200 at number 49.[24]
In Canada, the album debuted at number eight on the Canadian Albums Chart.[25] On December 18, 2012, the album was certified gold by Music Canada (MC) for shipments exceeding 40,000 units in Canada.[26]
